Curriculum

Mr. B will be turning 3 on the last day of October (Halloween!!!). Previously, I was working with him in a very loose interest-based manner and following What Your Preschooler Needs to Know by E.D. Hirsch. Now, I would like to start putting my collection of thrift store resources together into a very loose curriculum.

I am primarily using the What Your Kindergartner Need to Know book by E.D. Hirsch to plan our curriculum and supplementing with books and manipulative.

Mr. B has an incredible memory and picks up information very well (he memorizes and remembers almost everything) and learns best by making connections. Therefore, for the subjects we cover I like to have appropriate books, visuals (flash cards or photos) and manipulatives (toys). This is the hear, see and touch approach to learning. Recently, he is becoming interested in more complex topics and asks to study and discuss subjects in more detail.

Poetry: Poetry Speaks to Children

Phonics: Phonics is interest led. We only work on pre-reading skills when Mr. B asks. We also read Hop on Pop, Put Me in the Zoo and Go Dog Go (which i have heard are the best books for pre-reading).

Literature: We read ALL THE TIME!

Math
  • Money and Presidents
  • Counting to 100 and by 10s. This is something that Mr. B asks us to do with him. We also sing a counting by 10s song that Mr. B memorized.
  • We play Shoots and Ladders and HiHo! Cherry-O
  • We are starting very informal addition
